    In an effort to address issues of equitable and quality education, culturally responsive science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) pedagogy is explored across the State of Hawai‘i through the Mathematics Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Defined as the intersection of culture, historical traditions, and sociocultural roots, among others, ethnomathematics encourages the investigation and adaptation of these concepts within formal and informal environments. The goal is to acknowledge that diverse cultural systems and frameworks have served many cultures well and to help educators discover pathways that foster student engagement through conceptualizing and supporting multiple approaches to learning STEM. A strong component is finding relevance in real-world applications through physical, environmental, spiritual, and cultural capacities.

    The intellectual merit of the institute lies in assessing the effects of using culture-based STEM curriculum units to increase student engagement and learning achievement in alignment with CCSS and NGSS. The broader impact is that ethnomathematics practices are recovered and integrated in STEM curriculum units that enrich the global pedagogical base, and support further P-20 research.

    According to the 2011 U.S. Census Bureau, Hawai‘i’s population is among the most diverse in the nation (Hawaiian 25%, Caucasian 20%, Filipino 19%, Japanese 12%, Korean 8%, Chinese 3%, and Other 13%). There are a range of schools classified as urban, suburban, and rural. The Hawai‘i State Department of Education serves many students in poverty, and the proportion of students on free
